Mahler, Gustav
DEATH MASK

Catalogue Note

The 'smiling, forgiving, distinguished face' of the composer (Alma Mahler), who died on 18 May 1911 in a Vienna sanatorium following treatment for a severe streptococcal blood infection. We understand that the present mask is one of four or five casts of the original model by Carl Moll (1861-1945), the father-in-law of the composer. According to Jens Malte Fischer, Gustav Mahler (2011), p.684, although Moll was present at Mahler's deathbed, the mask was actually taken by the sculptor Anton Sandig.
