asking him, if he performs Landkjending, to correct some stupid things, as [his publisher] Peters played him a trick by not sending him any proofs, providing him with new music for two corrections (4 bb. and 7bb.), one concerning the addition of four more bars for the oboes, and also requesting humorously a change to the trumpet parts; in the second part of the letter Grieg thanks him for making these changes, notes that the organ part may be dispensed with and asks him to make use of the student choral societies

Catalogue Note

Grieg's cantata Landkjending ("Land-Sighting") for baritone, male chorus, orchestra and organ ad lib., setting a poem by B. Bjørnson, dates from 1872, being subsequently revised by the composer in 1873 and also in 1881, the year of its publication by Peters. Grieg's correspondent is probably the Danish composer and organist Otto Malling (1848-1915), a pupil of Niels Gade and J.P.E. Hartmann. We gratefully acknowledge the kind assistance of Peter Schmaltz-Jorgensen in our cataloguing of this lot.
