Catalogue Note

The Raduga publishing house was set up in 1921 by Lev Moisevich Kliachko who soon moved into the publication of children's books by his friend Chukovsky (see lots 180 and 183) and became the most successful publisher of children's books, producing works by Marshak, Shvarts and Barto (see lot 180 for a collection of children's books) with covers and illustrations by first-rate artists of the period, such as Lebedev and Dobuzhinsky. Eduard Krimmer (1900-1974), for example, designed more than thirty book covers for Raduga. Raduga published Lebedev's The Hunt (1925), Chukovsky's The giant roach (1922) and Mandelshtam's The Kitchen (1926).

By 1926 the financial footing of Raduga was compromised by government regulations and by 1927 Kliachko was forbidden to reprint the majority of his backlist. Not surprisingly, Raduga folded in 1930 and most of the authors moved to the state publishing house, Gosizdat.

It is possible that the design for Fedorchenko's book was never used, as we have not found a work by her with that title.
