Catalogue Note

First edition of Mandelshtam's volume of essays. The library stamps in this copy relate to several different gulags, somewhat ironic as Mandelshtam himself died (of unspecified causes) while in a camp near Vladivostock after his arrest in May 1938, though the library issue date label at the front contains dates from 1930, before Mandelshtam's fall from favour.
