Catalogue Note

A detailed map of troop movements during the war against Nazi Germany in 1941-1945, together with an inset map depicting the war with Japan that ended in a Soviet victory in the autumn of 1945. The imprint states that 105,000 copies were printed in order to publicise the military successes of the Soviet regime; its function as propaganda is demonstrated by a lengthy quote from Stalin at the top of the map. It was subsequently reprinted in 1951 and 1954. Bekova, the editor, also produced historical atlases for schools and the scale of this map indicates that it may well have been intended for school use as well.
