Catalogue Note

Selenographia was Hevelius's first important publication and made his reputation as an astronomical writer. As well as describing the moon, Hevelius includes descriptions of all the planets, technical details of the astronomical instruments used to view them and provides a review of the literature on the subject.

The last work in this volume describes the "arms" of Saturn that had been observed by Galileo; it was not until Huygens published Systema Saturnium in 1659 that the arms were discovered to be rings around the planet.
