Catalogue Note

Walter Halvorsen (1887-1972) was a Norwegian art critic and dealer who was responsible for introducing the French Impressionists to Scandinavia. He had studied at the Académie Matisse in Paris in 1909-1910 and became acquainted there with young French artists. During the First World War he arranged auctions in Norway (which remained neutral in the war) of paintings by Matisse, Picasso, Bonnard, Gauguin, van Gogh, Cezanne and others. His friendship with Braque lasted until the artist's death in 1963; he subsequently arranged an exhibition of Braque's works in Oslo and Bergen in 1964-65.
