Catalogue Note
A large and rare collection of photographs, many of which are the earliest known photographs of these castles and historic houses. Mencke established a studio in Hamburg in 1860 and is believed to have taken over 1,000 photographs of these impressive residences, taking great care over the artistic composition of each. He generally issued at least two photographs of each building to show the locality and a closer view and nearly every image is identified on the mount with the name and family of ownership.
