Catalogue Note

The first edition was published in Mexico in 1699 but only comprised fifteen leaves; this edition has over 500 pages (the bulk of which is devotional literature regarding the seven archangels) and is the first edition to contain the map. Serrano, a Jesuit in the Philippines, describes how two Jesuit priests encountered some natives from the Palau islands, southeast of the Philippines, and from them were able to draft the map of 87 of the islands in the chain; this work therefore contains the earliest discovery of those islands.
