Catalogue Note

Honegger's score for Antigone, predates his opera on the same subject.  Jean Cocteau's play was produced at the Théâtre de l'atelier in Paris in 1922.  Honegger explains that "when Cocteau's adaptation of Antigone was performed at the Atelier, I wrote a little score for the stage for oboe and harp.  Later this rapid and violent text incited me to compose my musical tragedy", (I Am a Composer, 1966, p.104).  Honegger's opera Antigone was finally staged in Brussels in December 1927.
