Catalogue Note

First edition of the Austrian, later the German national anthem, the only one, as Fuld observes, written by a major composer. The theme, slightly modified, formed the basis of the variation slow movement of Haydn's "Emperor" Quartet Op.76 no.3, also of 1797. Haydn's great Volkslied served as Austrian national anthem up until 1946; from 1841 on, when Hoffmann von Fallersleben wrote new words for it, its music served, as it still does, as a national anthem for Germany.
