Description

  • Autograph manuscript of a "Sanctus" and "Benedictus", and an autograph quotation of Bach's "Prelude" in C Major
  • ink on paper
notated for four voices, on up to eight staves per page, with one passage deleted by the composer, 5 pages, oblong 4to (c.17.5 X 27cms), cut from a larger sheet, a few stains,



together with a short autograph musical quotation of the first prelude from the first book of J.S. Bach's "Das wohltemperirte Clavier" , signed and inscribed by Gounod to Vaucorbeil ("Sébastien Bach est l'Abraham de la Musique; il la contenait toute entière, Ch. Gounod"), 1 page, 8vo; together with a manuscript of "Prélude et petite Fugue pour le piano", signed at the foot of each leaf and annotated on the title page ("à Madame Heyberger...Ch. Gounod"), 5 pages, folio, 12-stave paper, some browning to the title page

Gounod writes here the opening bars of the prelude that forms the basis of his most famous and oft-played work, the "Ave Maria".
