Catalogue Note
First edition of Chevreul's treatise on colour, based on his lectures at the tapestry works Les Gobelins in 1836 and 1838, where Chevreul was trying to improve the colour fastness of wool dyes. He also noticed the effect of neighbouring colours on the intensity of individual hues. His theories influenced the work of painters such as Eugène Delacroix and Georges Seurat.
