Provenance

Constantine Carathéodory, bookplate, with inscription to him from his colleague Alfred Pringsheim dated 1939, Munich, on flyleaf. Loosely inserted is a letter from Karl Boehm (professor at the Karlsruhe Technische Hochschule) to Carathéodory, dated 1934 (when Carathéodory was professor at the University of Munich), regarding the isoperimetric problem.

Catalogue Note

The first tract is Jakob's response to his brother Johann's solution to the isoperimetric problem, posed by Jakob in Acta Eruditorum in May 1697, which he considered unsatisfactory and criticised publicly, leading both to discord between the brothers and to the calculus of variations; the second tract compares Johann's solution with the isoperimetric problem as posed by Jakob.
