Catalogue Note

The Knights of St Stephen were founded by Cosimo I de' Medici in 1562, in imitation of the Knights of St John of Malta, to defend the Tuscan coasts from attacks by Barbary pirates. Many of these naval battles took place in the Greek archipelago and the coast of Barbary. Among the plates are views of Prevesa, and views of sea-battles off Skiathos, Chios and Negroponte.
