Catalogue Note
The only publication by the first scientific academy; according to the editor's own correspondence, eight hundred copies were printed, all for private distribution. Although the Accademia was only active for ten years, it achieved remarkable results, and exerted enormous influence on the European scientific community. The Saggi remains one of the earliest scientific and technical journals ever published (preceded by the Philosophical Transactions of the Royal Society of London in 1665); its impact is attested by the remarkable number of later editions published: thirteen in the original Italian, one in English, two in French, and two in Latin.
