Catalogue Note

rare: autograph sources for Paganini's music are seldom offered for sale at auction.

This is an important and unrecorded source for Paganini's quartets.  In 1820 Paganini had six guitar quartets (Op. 4 and 5) published by Ricordi of Milan, where the autograph manuscripts are still retained.  Moretti & Sorrento describe only one other manuscript source for Op.5: an incomplete set of manuscript parts for this quartet at the Istituto di Studi Paganiniani in Genoa, lacking the cello part.  The other three parts all have the same wording on the title-pages as the present cello part, but apparently no autograph annotations such as those found here.
