London, Arts Council of Great Britain, 25 Paintings by Contemporary Welsh Artists, cat. no.24, details untraced.

Condition

Original canvas. There are a few very minor flecks of paint loss in the lower left corner. There are some minor hairline cracks in a few places along the left and right vertical edges and in the sky - all only visible upon close inspection. There is a surface scratch approximately 4cm. long running through the dash of blue pigment in the right-hand mountains. The surface may benefit from a light clean; otherwise the work appears in good overall condition with strong passages of impasto. Under UV light there appears to be some localised retouching to the above mentioned surface scratch. Held in a dark stained, wooden frame. Catalogue Note

'I am so glad you like the landscape as it is a very early one done when I was just beginning to realise that I might, one day, become a painter...'. (Williams, private correspondence with the present owner, 2002)

The present work was most likely included in the artist's 1948 exhibition at Colnaghi's, London and the first owner, Sir George Rostrevor Hamilton, was one of the artist's earliest patrons.
