Condition

The painting is in good condition overall, as is the canvas, which is clear and sound. There are minor wear and handling around the edges of the painting, along with associated spots of paint loss on the left margin. Close observation reveals faint and stable craquelures on the clouds, temple and lower right. Ultraviolet light inspection, reveals some scattered minor retouching primarily along the margins, sky, and lower right. Framed.

Catalogue Note

“ Compared with his former temperamentful and more pastose brush strokes, especially for trees, one can already see his later tendency to place just as much emphasis on structure as on content.”
