Catalogue Note

Balraj Khanna's fascination for romantic English poetry took him to the Lake District soon after his arrival in England in the mid-1960s. He spent several days trekking in the countryside and retracing the footsteps of his mentors, William Wordsworth and Samuel Taylor Coleridge who had immortalised this district in verse, a century and a half earlier. Upon returning to his studio in London, he attempted to create his own visual language in line and colour to interpret the essence of what he had seen and felt during these excursions. The result was a series of his 'nature paintings' that are as evocative as they are rich in incident.
