Minor areas of discolouration in the lower quadrant of the painting and slight rubbing of the gold leaf around the border of the work, as viewed. This painting is in good condition overall. This work is unframed.

Catalogue Note

The composition of this painting is derived from an earlier Mughal prototype, as seen in the illustration by the female miniature artist Khurshid Banu in the Howard Hodgkin Collection (see Oxford 2012, p.44, no.11). Elephant fights were a popular past time during the Mughal period, described in detail by the French traveller Bernier in the mid-seventeenth century (Bernier 1916, pp.267-77).
