Catalogue Note

This illustration is possibly a representation of a Ragamala. During the Mughal campaigns in the Deccan in the eighteenth century Ragamala iconography was visually disseminated to the south by migrating Rajput artists and their patrons. These Deccani Ragamalas were often far removed from their northern prototypes.  Ragamala sets were also produced for the Nawabs of Awadh at Faizabad and Lucknow, a school of painting that provided much inspiration to the Hyderabadi artists. (see Glynn, Skelton & Dallapiccola 2011 for a further discussion of this group)
