Provenance

Acquired by the current owners from the Dutta family, who were zamindars of Calcutta. Gifted to the Dutta family by Butto Kristo Paul, another zamindar family of Calcutta. 

Condition

In areas of background and to the sari, minor losses to the canvas with associated repair and restoration, only visible on the reverse. Fair condition, as viewed.

Catalogue Note

The 'woman in a blue sari' was a subject that the artist returned to on a number of occasions, one of the versions of this subject was published in Shilpi an illustrated journal of fine arts edited by Hemen Mazumdar and published by The Indian Academy of Art, Calcutta. The painting was also published in 'Chabir Chasma' a book in Bengali on Hemen Mazumdar.
