Condition
Overall the condition of the marble is good. There is some wear and dirt to the surface consistent with age and some weathering to the top of the head, nose and wreath. There is an area of nicks to the right breast and the lock of hair across her chest. There are a few chips including a larger one to the edge of the drapery on the proper left shoulder.
Some faint naturally occuring veins are visible on the surface, particularly around the proper right shoulder and neck. There are several minor inclusions consistent with material, including around the proper right eye and under the left breast.

Catalogue Note
Ses cheveux attachés à l'arrière, retombant en une longue boucle sur son épaule décolletée, Cérès est coiffée d'une couronne d'épis de blé, la désignant comme personnification de l'Eté. Elle est vêtue d'un large manteau drapé sur ses épaules, laissant apparaître son sein droit. Par son style et le traitement du modelé, Cérès est tout à fait caractéristique des œuvres d'artistes ayant travaillé sur le chantier du château de Versailles à la fin du XVIIe siècle, comme le sculpteur Simon Mazière. Né à Pontoise en 1649, Mazière participe avec François Girardon dès 1679 au décor du château de Versailles et réalisera des statues pour les parcs de Fontainebleau et Marly. Parmi ses œuvres les plus importantes, on connaît ses statues grandeur nature du Printemps (1688), le Dieu Pan (1689) et la Compagne de Diane, réalisée en 1710/15 pour le parc de Versailles (aujourd'hui au musée du Louvre).
