Condition

Overall the condition of the bronze is excellent. There is some minor wear and dirt to the surface consistent with age with a few minor nicks to the haunches.

Catalogue Note

Cette représentation équestre du Général Bonaparte est certainement la plus romantique vision de Napoléon que développe Barye. Elle forme un pendant avec Le Duc d'Orléans, aux dimensions presque similaires. L'artiste parvient à rendre avec un grand réalisme la selle et les détails du costume, sans pour autant départir le groupe de sa puissance émotionnelle: d'une main calme mais ferme, le futur empereur contrôle sa puissante monture et la guide vers la promesse de sa gloire future. Une épreuve ancienne est conservée au musée du Louvre (Inv. no. OA 5735), une autre à la Walters Art Gallery de Baltimore provenant de l'ancienne collection Perronne-Barye (Inv. no. 27.161).
