Condition

Good overall condition with some surface dirt. The marble appears to have been restored original neck, and there appears to be a fine horizontal restored break through legs and dress just below the knees, maybe the tip of her nose. The signature may have been added later. Marble finely carved and decorative.

Catalogue Note

Peu est connu de la Vie et l'oeuvre de Pierre-Joseph Michel (1737-1759), frère du célèbre sculpteur Clodion (1738-1814). Originaire de Nancy et d'un an l'ainé de Clodion, il sera formé dans l'atelier de son oncle Lambert-Sigisbert Adam (1700-1759) à Paris. L'Erigone est à rapprocher de la Jeune femme lisant une lettre, en terre cuite, signée de Michel, au musée Cognac Jay, ainsi que son Euterpe en marbre (haut. 54.6 cm) conservée au Allen Memorial Art Museum à Oberlin (inv. n° 1968. 15).
