Description
- platinum, red coral, enamel, diamond, pearl, aquamarine
The sumptuous oasis scene of openwork design with four carved coral elephants walking alongside a river set with calibré-cut and buff-top aquamarines, with palm trees, waterfowl, a butterfly and turtle heightened in multi-colored enamel, decorated throughout with flowerheads centered by seven pearls measuring approximately 3.8 mm, the mountains in the distance set with calibré-cut and buff-top emeralds, set throughout with numerous old European and single-cut diamonds weighing approximately 3.85 carats; circa 1930.
Condition
In good condition. The scene depicted on the brooch is much more intricate than it appears at first glance; much more well-represented in teh enhancement shot in the printed catalogue. The coral elephants range from medium orange red to red, one of the elephants with evidence of polyp vessels on the reverse. The buff-top aquamarines are medium-light blue and eye-clean. The buff-top emeralds are medium-deep green and lightly included. The pearls are round and silvery white with soft rose and green overtones. The diamonds are approximately G-I color, VS-SI clarity. There are enamel losses to two of the palm tree trunks, otherwise the enamel is in good condition. Evidence of what may have been a workshop or maker's mark on the pin-catch, but it is so rubbed it is difficult to decipher.
