Description
- gold, coral, onyx
The multi-strand tassel composed of variously-shaped coral and onyx beads, suspended by a coral ring, the necklace composed of 87 onyx beads graduating from approximately 20.1 to 8.2 mm, alternating with 42 coral beads measuring approximately 13.7 to 7.9 mm, length 50 inches, tassel length 5½ inches, with French assay and partial workshop marks.
Condition
In good condition. This is a large, long necklace, so it is best suited to a tall woman or a woman with a larger frame. The coral beads and carved segments are dark, slightly orangy red, some beads with small polyp vessels and lighter mottling. These irregularities are most evident on the large coral ring and on the carved coral segment at the top of the tassel. (This segment also bears a chip at the top edge.) There is a significant chip on the underside of one of the onyx beads where a gold loop has been inserted. Otherwise the beads are in good condition. The gold ring accenting the tassel is dented and scratched due to age. The various gold elements of the necklace bearing workshop or maker's marks, but they are too rubbed to be deciphered.
