Prospective buyers should inspect each lot to satisfy themselves as to condition and must understand that any statement made by Sotheby's is merely a subjective qualified opinion. Illustrations in the catalogue may not be actual size. Prospective purchasers are reminded that, unless the catalogue description specifically states that a stone is natural, we have assumed that some form of treatment may have been used and that such treatment may not be permanent. Our presale estimates reflect this assumption.

Catalogue Note
Born in Berlin, Walter Hans Conrad Veidt (1893-1943) was a prominent actor of both screen and stage. Veidt swiftly rose to theater stardom at the Deutches Theater until he was courted by various directors, producers, and actors in the film industry, including John Barrymore. His work led him to travel to the United States, Great Britain, and Germany, where he eventually married Lily Ilona Barta, a Hungarian from a prominent family. Boasting a repertoire of classic films including 'Casablanca,' 'The Thief of Bagdad,' and 'The Spy in Black,' Veidt’s performances were marked by an elegance and intensity well-suited to the sweeping productions of Hollywood’s golden age. After her Conrad's death, Lily found success as an agent to some of Hollywood's leading actors and actresses and eventually relocated to New York City.
