The black silk brocade bag topped with a gold female figure with a carved ivory face, the frame set in the corners with two birds applied with white and black enamel, further accented by numerous round and calibré-cut emeralds and numerous rose-cut diamonds, numbered 3431.

Condition

In good condition overall with faint scratching and nicking to the gold frame on the exterior and interior and light surface wear to the silk. The interior bearing a label stating "Artbag Creations, 735 Madison Ave. New York." The handle, not pictured in the printed catalogue, is of the same fabric of the purse and is 13 inches long. Few examples of chipping and scratching to the enamel, but no apparent enamel loss and not visible when viewed from the front. The round and calibre-cut emeralds are medium-light slightly bluish green, moderately included, with some chipping and surface-reaching inclusions. The diamonds on the gold frame are near colorless and add to the decorative quality of the purse.

Catalogue Note

A handbag of similar design is illustrated in Masterpieces of French Jewelry by Judith Price, page 79.

The inspiration for the figure atop this purse comes from a wooden spoon in the collection of the Louvre. Called 'the swimmer spoons,' these young female figures symbolize love and longevity. Although such spoons were certainly practical in nature, it is believed that these designs were viewed more as a piece of art or a charm than as a utilitarian object.
