Description

Composed of twelve pierced open work gold plaques, each set at the centre with a painted enamel miniature depicting one of the Zodiac signs, accented by its associated astral gemstones and flanked with oval reliefs symbolic of each month, terminating to foliate scrolls set with blue enamel and circular-cut gemstones, length approximately 190mm, fitted case.

Provenance

Theodolinde de Beauharnais, Princess of Leuchtenberg (1814-1857), possibly as a wedding gift when she married Wilhelm Duke of Urach, Count of Wurttemberg in 1841; to her daugher Princess Auguste Eugènie, Princess Urach (1842-1916), married to Franz Count Thun-Hohenstein (1826-1888); to his cousin Elisabeth Countess Thun-Hohenstein, née Baroness Mladota Solopisk (1805-1876).

Thence by descent to the present owner.

Condition

Clasp stamped maker's marks 'A.3' within a shield-shape and stamped 'FAD'. Coloured stones include citrines, amethysts, bloodstones, sapphires, emeralds, topazes and peridots, some with nicks and abrasions. Enamel of Zodiac signs in very good condition, blue enamel in the frames and scroll works with areas of loss and scratches. Gold decoration well articulated. Clasp secure. Signs of normal wear to the metal, scratches consistent with use. In good condition.
