Deuxième ouvrage de Cendrars illustré par Léger après J'ai tué, l'année précédente (voir lot 142).
"Pour ce dernier, [Léger] conçut têtes de chapitres sur double page et illustrations de façon à faire date dans l'édition moderne. Les illustrations étaient des reproductions de dessins dont les couleurs furent ajoutées au pochoir d'après les indications précises du peintre..." (L. Saphire).
