Paru en octobre 1913, Le Grand Meaulnes surprit par sa nouveauté, et manqua de peu le prix Goncourt. Cet ouvrage est l'unique oeuvre achevée par Alain-Fournier, qui mourut au combat dix mois plus tard, le 2 septembre 1914, à l'âge de vingt-huit ans.
