Publié anonymement avec le soutien de Madame de Tencin, l'ouvrage connut un succès immédiat. Il fut réédité et contrefait à de très nombreuses reprises les deux années suivant sa parution.
Ouvrage révolutionnaire, il reçut les éloges de l'Europe entière, influença les constitutions française et américaine et fut mis à l'Index par l'Eglise et la Sorbonne.
Des annotations au premier volume rendent hommage à Montesquieu: "Bordeaux, se Dt peu se glorifier de l'immortel auteur de l'esprit des Loix, il abitait au Chateau de la Brède à 3 lieux de Bordeaux, né le 18 janvier 1689, il mourut à Paris le 10 février 1755 à 66 ans".
