Condition

This canvas is not lined and seems to still be on its original stretcher, although metal reinforcements have been applied to the corners of this stretcher. There are eight patches on the bottom half of the reverse of the canvas, and two small patches on the reverse in the upper center and upper right. The paint layer seems to be cleaned and is in very fresh and lively condition. The restorations that have been applied seem to be reasonable, but could be improved. The largest of the retouched damages is in the lower center, where a complex tear in the canvas, running about four or five inches vertically in the orange rectangle, has been patched and retouched. All of the other restorations are very minor. The retouches are clearly visible under ultraviolet light. There are a few additional spots of retouching in the orange rectangle in the lower left, as well as a few spots around the inscription “Montenegro” in the lower left. There are numerous small spots of retouching in the hands and torso of the figure standing in the lower right. There is a vertical scratch that has been retouched under chin of the cow. There are also retouches in the sky immediately to the right of the ear of the cow, a few spots in the upper right and a few spots in the upper left. Despite these restorations sounding numerous, they are very isolated and the paint layer itself has a fresh, brilliant quality.
