Catalogue Note
first american illustrated hebrew-english haggadah
Henry Frank printed his first New York haggadah in 1850. The popularity of his edition and the growing Jewish population of the United States led Frank to reprint the Passover liturgy numerous times. In 1857, he published this illustrated haggadah with an English translation. The illustrations, printed as ten separate unnumbered plates and interleaved between numbered text pages, appeared in both the Hebrew-English haggadah seen here and the Hebrew-German version printed by Frank the same year. The illustrations are based on the popular images first seen in the Amsterdam Haggadah of 1695.
