Condition

Good overall condition. Traces of vermilion on forehead and feet of Chamunda, and also on elephant above. Chips to prostrate figure below. Small losses to edges of torana. Weathering and accretion consistent with age throughout.

Catalogue Note

The tantric goddess Chamunda with six arms, seated in rajalilasana on a double lotus throne, emaciated with pendulous breasts, surrounded by demon figures and holding aloft the implements of a tantrika, including the khatvanga, damaru, panapatra or kapala, and severed head, wearing the flayed skin of an elephant as a cape.

Compare with an 11th century black stone stele of Standing Chamunda, Eastern India, Pala period, in the Los Angeles County Museum of Art Collection, accession no. M.90.166.
