Catalogue Note

It is unusual to find Bodhisattvas displaying the dharmachakra mudra, a gesture usually associated with the Buddha, marking his first sermon at Sarnath. For two other sculptures of youthful bodhisattvas displaying this mudra, see Isao Kurita, Gandharan Art, vol. II, Tokyo & New York, Tokyo, 2003, nos. 128 and 141, pp. 53 & 57.
