Catalogue Note
Krishna is seen here in his Cosmic form as Vishnu centering the multiple levels of the Universe – the celestial abode of the Gods at his head, the material world of humans in his middle and the netherworld at his feet – with his serpent Sheshanaga beneath.
The Pandava and Kaurava armies gather on either side of his feet. The seven oceans of the earth encircle his body. In the center is Krishna with his gopis dancing the rasalila, or cosmic dance of ecstasy. Brahma sits within the crown on his head while Shiva and Parvati look on from their seat at Mount Kailasa on the upper right, and the four Vedas, the fountain of all knowledge, stand respectfully on either side.
