The Maharaja leans against a bolster embellished with flowers, the image placed within an inner border decorated with scrolling floral motifs in gold, set in concentric outer marbled borders, comprising 30 small panels of calligraphy in small nasta'liq script.
The present illustration may be compared to two album pages from the Read Albums, both of which share similarly-styled marbled borders, see B. Schmitz, Islamic and Indian Manuscripts and Paintings in The Pierpont Morgan Library, New York, 1997, pp.170-2, pl.42 and figs.236 & 237.
