Three maidens bathing in a secluded spot by a river bank are surprised by an interloper peeping at them through the bushes. On the upper left a male attendant waits by their litter drawn by a bullock cart. In the distance the rising sun brightens the horizon with its orange rays.
The scene is rendered with elegance and carries a sense of romance in the courtly Mughal tradition. The setting is reminiscent of Krishna legends as they relate to his interplay with the gopis. Indeed, the prominent placement of the cows in the scene certainly suggests a connection to Krishna.
For another depiction of a prince spying on a harem bathing, see S. Czuma, Indian Art from the George P. Bickford Collection, Cleveland, 1975, cat. 47.
