Description
- A Ruler on a Hunt
- Opaque watercolor heightened with gold on paper
- image 7 1/2 by 10 7/8 in. (19 by 27.7 cm) unframed
The illustration depicts a narrative with a hilly mound with trees separating the picture plane. On the right we see lovers in repose interrupted by a tiger who is wounded by an arrow expertly released from the archer's bow. On the left a raja hunts antelope with his consorts within an enclosure.
The scene is very similar to an oft-seen illustration from the Hamir Hath, depicting Mahima as the resourceful lover, mortally wounding a tiger who interrupts his coitus with his paramour while Alauddin and his wives hunt deer in an adjacent space.
For another Pahari illustration from the Hamir Hath very closely related to the present image, see Sotheby's New York, September 20 2005, lot 115. The treatment of the facial features in the present painting, particularly the exaggerated elongated eyes, suggests a Chamba origin for the work.

Provenance
Carl Lobel Collection, Paris
Condition
Fairly good overall condition. Minor abrasions and rubbing to pigment throughout the image - along the blue upper ground, on the figures and robes of the princes, ladies and tiger, on the green ground particularly down the right side of the image. Colors are slightly lighter and brighter in reality. This lot is exhibited in a temporary frame.
