Description

  • A Lady prepares for a rendezvous with her Lover
  • Attributed to artist Bhatti Dana
  • Opaque watercolor heightened with gold on paper
  • image 14 by 9 5/8 in. (35.5 by 24.5 cm) unframed
In the foreground a nimbated lady sits by a pool as she is carefully groomed by her attendants in preparation for her tryst with her lover in a lush garden at center. A flowing stream acts as a pictorial device separating the scene from the backdrop of a hill fort and city seen in the receding distance.

The features of the lady's companion, also nimbated, bear a close resemblance to Raja Man Singh (r. 1804-1834). It was common for rulers to be portrayed in idealized roles such as Radha and Krishna, which seems to be the case in the present image.

Condition

Fairly good overall condition. Retouching and repainting to the two unclothed ladies on the lower left. Abrasions to pigment in the area of the pool and railings at the bottom, in some areas of the foliage at center particularly adjoining the faces of the lovers at middle left, and in the areas of the sky on the top, all clearly visible in catalogue illustration. This lot is exhibited in a temporary frame.
