Catalogue Note

The cardinal is among the most prevalent and salient subjects in Manzù's oeuvre. The theme of the cardinal stemmed from the artist's first visit to Rome, where the sight of Pope Pius XI flanked by two cardinals at St. Peter's Basilica evoked an artistic spark. Manzú was adamant that it was not the religious overtones that attracted him to this theme, but the ubiquity of image. This notion is exemplified within the present work via the figure's intentionally nondescript features and unornamented garment which reads more as a geometric form than a body. Manzú created over fifty representations of cardinals from the early 1930s until his death in 1991. He portrayed these figures standing and seated, in marble, alabaster and bronze, but never used reference material or a model.
