Condition

In very good condition. The work has a deckled edge. Pinholes scattered around the edge with some accompanying rust. Hard crease running from upper-left to lower-right corner with some accompanying staining. A small loss to the paper at upper edge of this crease. The verso shows a multi-figure charcoal drawing and some mild studio stains. Hinged to the mount in a few places along upper edge. The handmade sheet shows some dark fibers inherent to the medium. Three tiny spots of repair: one lower-right along crease, two along left edge near pinholes.

Catalogue Note

According to an early owner, Charles Alexandre, Magritte produced this sinuous and slightly sinister image at age 20 in response to a competition sponsored by the government seeking imagery for use in a public campaign against venereal disease.
