Condition

The canvas is not lined. There appears to be no evidence of retouching visible under UV light. The work is in very good condition and would benefit from a light clean.

Catalogue Note

'The pianist and composer Joseph Pembaur [...] was regarded as a 'magician at the piano' and held a piano master class at the Münchner Akademie für Tonkunst from 1921 onwards. [...]
In this phase of the artist's development he seems to have been sounding out artistic options as he moved towards an unmistakeable style of his own. Special compositional or stylistic wishes on the part of the client can be ruled out here, as the portrait of Pembaur - unlike other works from this Munich period - was not done on commission. Five years later Schad painted the portrait of Pembaur's pupil Anna Gabioneta in Vienna, also uncommissioned' (Thomas Ratzka, op.cit., p. 110).
