Catalogue Note
Giacomo Raffaelli (1753-1836) is credited with the invention of micromosaics in Rome in the latter part of the 18th century. Whether true or not his works, often featuring animals, birds or butterflies on a monochrome ground within dotted borders, and often signed and dated on the reverse, are very distinctive.
