Condition

The movement is not running at the time of cataloguing and will require service. It is numbered 12614 and is unsigned. Though the bezel bears the signature Patek Philippe & Co, Hennegan Bates & Co Baltimore, the manufacture of this watch is not confirmed by Patek Philippe, and so one can only consider this a Swiss piece. The case shows some slight losses to the enamel.

Catalogue Note

Together with a fitted presentation case marked Hennegen Bates & Co., Baltimore. This firm was founded in Pittsburgh, PA in the 1860s and later moved to Baltimore, MD. It was known for its fine offering of silver, jewelry and watches. The firm is also known for having retailed two important Patek Philippe two-train minute repeating watches, both from the same decade as the present lot.

Only two bell-form pendant watches by Patek Philippe have previously appeared on the market. The third known example is illustrated in Huber, M. & Banbery, A., Patek Philippe, Vol. I., 1993, p 74.

Page 75, pl. 75b of the same text illustrates a ball-form watch with a 6''' movement nearly identical to that of the present lot. The present lot and the illustrated piece both feature a similar engraved number, 12614 and 16010, respectively, to the movement plate. These serial numbers were internal references for the workshops responsible for creating these specialty ball-form movements for use by Patek Philippe.
