Condition

A German silver and brass analemmatic dial, English, late 18th century Has been cleaned, in good overall condition. The dial may have originally have had a plum line hanging from gnomon as there is a spare hanging hook The equinoctial ring dial- A new screw has been made for the altitude adjustment, a new steady pin has been made for the centre bracket and the dial has been cleaned. The complete description of the dial is below ,cataloguing for the second piece only, the meridian ring is engraved with a latitude scale 0-80º but divided to 90º reading to 1º. A pointer on the suspension piece may be set against a scale to adjust the instrument for latitude. Pivoted to the meridian ring is the equinoctial ring and engraved on one side and the inner face with an hour scale 1-12 x 2 reading to five minutes. The reverse of the equinoctial ring and the unused parts of the meridian ring are engraved with the latitudes of thirty seven places mainly in German and Central Europe. Within the hour ring is an usual bridge, this is a full circular thin plate with the center cut away except for an arched reinforcement strut. The plate is engraved on one edge with a zodiac scale, and on the other side, but on the same edge, a month scale is punched. The two together thus provide the requisite zodiacal calendar (0º Aries = 21 March). Pivoted diametrically opposite the center point of this scale is an alidade split to pass on either side of the plate. In use this alidade is set to the appropriate date, the dial is suspended in the meridian and the plate turned until a spot of sun light passes through each of the two pinnules in one vane of the alidade to fall exactly on the blank pinnules of the other. The time may then be read off from the position of the plate against the hour scale engraved on the equinoctial ring. The operation is an inconvenient one, and this central plate may be a later replacement of the bridge with sliding cursor which is more normal in this form of instrument. The mounts may also be later, if not they have been modified as one has two steady pins, the other only one. Beneath one or two steady pins is a now unused hole and the screws used appear to have machine cut threads.

Catalogue Note

A new round of popularity was given to analemmatic dials in late 18th century England. James Ferguson included a description in his Lectures on Select Subjects (London, 1760 and fourteen later editions), underlining the chief advantage of the dial - that it is self-orienting.
