  • A GILT-METAL CLOCK WATCH
  • Gilt metal, iron
  • diameter 57 mm
• gilt full plate two train verge movement possibly later, pierced and engraved balance cock, fusee and chain, baluster pillars, silver regulation dial, the hammer striking on damaged bell • champlevé gilt dial with Roman numerals, outer Arabic numerals for the minutes, hands missing, the center engraved with scrolls and dial bearing the signature in Chinese Made during of reign of Qian Long • gilt-metal and painted metal hinged case decorated with gilt rondels bordered by piqué work.

Condition

the movement of this watch is circa 1800 and the dial signature appears to be mid-19th century and possibly earlier, the balance cock appears to be of English origin and the movement is either English or Chinese made in the English style, the movement is not running and requires restoration, dial and case most likely of Chinese origin, the dial plate has been modified to accompanied this movement, hands lacking, bell broken. It appears to be a fascinating timepiece of Chinese and English origin.

Catalogue Note

The Qing Dynasty, a period of great cultural and scientific flourishing in China, rose to its height under the reign of the Emperor Qian Long (1711-1799). A passionate and educated patron of the arts, he assembled arguably the greatest private collection of Chinese art in history. He harbored a particular interest in horology and was known for his vast number of European clocks and watches, many of which are now housed in the Palace Museum in Beijing.
